The draw for the TOTAL BWF Para-Badminton World Championships 2019 were held at St. Jakobshalle, Basel, Switzerland for the tournament which will take place from 20 to 25 August 2019.
BWF president Poul-Erik Høyer who officiated at the draw ceremony said: “We are delighted with this development and believe it is not a moment too soon given Para badminton will be a part of the programme at the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Paralympics.”
The tournament also comes at a critical time for the athletes as they continue their quest to qualify for the debut of Para badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, and provides a platform for experiences that will be invaluable in continuously evolving the presentation of the sport of Para badminton.
“Para badminton has come a long way. It has grown significantly over the last five years since the International Paralympic Committee announced in 2014 that we will be part of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games,” said Paul Kurzo, BWF vice president.
One of Switzerland’s top wheelchair athletes, Karin Suter-Erath who will compete in the women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles, expressed her excitement for the event being held in her country. “I intend to take it one match at a time and get to the top of my group. When it is the top eight, it will be a tough challenge but I look forward to it.”
Reigning world champion in the women’s singles in WH2, Liu Yutong of China said: “I will perform like before as it is an honour to be part of the world championships again and I look forward to the Paralympics in 2020.”
