Today marks just two months to go until the TOTAL BWF World Championships 2019 in Basel, Switzerland.

It is a landmark occasion for the sport with it being the first time the World Championships and Para badminton World Championships will be held concurrently.

It comes as Para badminton will make its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games next year.

More history will be created as it is the 25th edition of the World Championships. The first World Championships was hosted in Malmo Sweden in 1977.

And for the first time since Lausanne 1995, the tournament will be staged in Switzerland.

Basel is well-equipped to stage this year’s milestone edition having hosted the Swiss Open for 28 years.

Did You Know?

In 1995, Jang Hye Ock became the youngest world champion. She was 18 years old; the same age as the World Championships at the time.

Some 18 years later, Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon became the youngest ever winner in a singles event when saluting in Guangzhou. Intanon was just 80 days older than Jang had been when she won in women’s doubles.

The last edition of the BWF Para-Badminton World Championships took place in Ulsan, Korea, with a record number of athletes from a record number of nations taking part.
